[August 23, 2012]  From the fine art in Latham Park to the barbecue competition, family activities, wine tasting and car show on the square; to balloons and kites and other fun things to do at the airport; to the 1800s Craft Show at Postville Park on Sunday; there is truly something for everyone at the Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival this weekend.

One event that seems to be growing each year and offers yet one more great opportunity to be outside, do some shopping, enjoy some live entertainment and great food, and maybe run into a few old friends and spend some time chatting, is the craft and flea market at Scully Park.

Scully Park is two blocks south of the downtown square. The Oasis Senior Center hosts the annual outdoor market there and this year has worked to make it bigger and better than ever before.

The market will officially open on Friday afternoon. Hours for the weekend are:

  • Friday, 3-6 p.m.

  • Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

  • Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

"Some items for sale will include storage chests, coins, old chairs, lots of antiques, garden light, solar lights, some array of toys, plenty of crafts of one sort or another, other types of treasures some people have discarded, and collectibles," said Dominic Dalpoas, executive director of the Oasis Senior Center.

"Vendors selling craft items will set up shop on the east side of the park. So we truly will have items for everyone's tastes and liking. Every lot within the park has been sold, so we have a full complement of vendors for this year's event."

According to a list provided by Dalpoas, over 100 vendors have committed to this year's event, including 26 from the Lincoln and Logan County area.

The Oasis will also offer two locations for folks to find some terrific food. The traditional Oasis food tent will be open at Scully Park. For those who wish to take a break in air-conditioned comfort, the Oasis Senior Center, at the corner of Pulaski and Kickapoo, will also be open and serving food. In addition, a bake sale will be going on inside the center, and the senior craft shop will be open for business.

"Open Air Café" in Scully Park

"The Oasis will feature our 'Open Air Café,' located next to our headquarters tent in Scully Park," Dalpoas said. "Shoppers can dine in the shade of our tent while tasting some of the best grilled sandwiches this side of the festival. The air is filled with aroma of grilled items enough to tempt the most serious dieter coming to the flea market.

"Our 'Lemonade Shake Up's' have been judged to be better than those at the county fair and state fair," Dalpoas shared. "We have an old family recipe which is sure to please everyone. We also are making the 'Lemonade Shake Up' for diabetics. So truly, everyone can enjoy our fabulous drink."

On Saturday the tent will open at 7 a.m. for breakfast and will feature biscuits and gravy, coffee, and juice.

Other food items offered throughout the full run of the market are rib-eyes, pork tenders, pulled pork sandwiches, brats, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos and cheese, chips, and --new this year -- funnel cakes.

Beverages will also be available: tea, lemonade shake-ups, strawberry shake-ups, soft drinks and water.

For lunch, the daily special on Saturday will be a pulled pork sandwich with baked beans, chips and a drink. Sunday, the special will be chicken and noodles with a vegetable side and drink.

At the Oasis Center

Saturday morning breakfast will also be available at the Oasis Senior Center and will feature biscuits and gravy, juice, and coffee.

Lunchtime sandwiches at the center will include the pulled pork sandwich and hot dogs, available with chips and a choice of coffee, tea or water.

The center will also feature the same lunchtime specials on Saturday and Sunday as in the park.

In addition, the center will host a bake sale of items made by local bakers.

"The Oasis pool table will serve as the tasty place in town for some real homemade items," Dalpoas said. "All of our members contribute their finest baked goods to make ours a little bit different and somewhat better than most. After all, who in this town bakes the best homemade cookies, brownies, pies, cakes and other desserts than our seniors?"

Dalpoas also noted that the Oasis Craft Shop will have some excellent items for sale as well.

"The Oasis craft group has been working at a feverish pace to stock our inside craft mall with the latest bargain-priced decorations for your home, office or wherever you want to place each and every item," he said. "The center is air-conditioned to make your shopping adventure a little less tiring. There truly are some really great bargains in our very own gift shop."

For those who are looking for a little relaxation and an opportunity to just enjoy the atmosphere of the market, there will be live entertainment on Saturday and Sunday both. Visitors can sit in the shaded areas of the park and enjoy some great music while they rest up and get ready to move on to the next event.

The Country Mavericks will perform on Saturday from noon to 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday the live entertainment will be impersonator Jerry Armstrong. Armstrong is tagged as a singer and comedy impressionist. He offers his interpretations of such well-known entertainers as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond and Elvis.

In addition to all this, Scully Park itself is just a really nice place to visit. The highlight of the park is the lovely fountain in the center. This summer the fountain got a little bit of a facelift, as it was drained and a new coat of sky-blue paint was added to the pool.

The area around the fountain features great places to sit, relax a bit and just enjoy the glory of the day.

Scully also features a nice playground for the kids, and it too has been refreshed this year with new mulch and landscape timbers. For the youngsters, it is a great place to expend some energy and give them a little break from shopping.

With so much going on this weekend, it might be a bit hard to make it to every spot, but it will be well worth your time to make a point of visiting Scully Park, and with three days to choose from, surely you'll be able to work it in.
