Carroll Catholic students were treated to a big -- no, giant -- visitor on Friday when pilot Mike Hernandez came and inflated the city of Lincoln balloon, Annie the Lady Bug.

Hernandez, from upstate New York, is an avid balloonist. He has piloted balloons all over the United States and loves the experiences of traveling, flying and meeting people. He recalled getting his commercial certificate by driving to Orlando, Fla., getting lucky to hit the weather just right on the scheduled day -- balloons are pretty particular about weather conditions -- and driving back home the next day.

Annie is this weekend's Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival's special-shape balloon.

In addition to Hernandez, Mayor Keith Snyder visited the students. Annie is sponsored by the city of Lincoln. Hernandez and Snyder both agreed to having a picture taken with each class, and of course Annie kept a watchful eye from the background.
