Remnants of Hurricane Isaac expected to douse Midwest

[August 30, 2012]  Heavy rain is likely this weekend from remnants of Hurricane Isaac. The National Weather Service in Lincoln released the following outlook Thursday at 4:09 a.m.:

The center of Isaac, now a tropical storm, was located in central Louisiana early this morning. The latest projection from the National Hurricane Center continues to weaken the winds as the system moves northwest. The remnant low is expected to be in central Missouri by Saturday morning, then slowly track northeast across central Illinois late Saturday night into Sunday.

Significant amounts of rain are likely to accompany this system as it moves across the Midwest. Current indications are that amounts of 3 to 6 inches are likely across much of central and southeast Illinois, with potential locally higher amounts. The rain should begin moving in from the south Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday and Sunday before diminishing from west to east Sunday night. The heaviest rain is likely to occur from late Friday night through Saturday afternoon.

Despite the extreme drought that has affected the area recently, such heavy rain amounts can lead to flash flooding, as the ground is hard in many areas and cannot readily absorb a lot of rain in a short period of time. Urban, low-lying or poor drainage areas are also susceptible to flooding.

In addition to the heavy rain threat, as the system approaches Saturday afternoon and Saturday night, some gusty winds may accompany the heavier showers and thunderstorms.

A large portion of the Midwest, from central and eastern Missouri into central parts of Illinois and Indiana, will have the potential for very heavy rain. However, any deviation in the forecast track will produce a significant adjustment in the axis of heavy rain across the region.

Be sure to monitor later forecasts if you have any outdoor plans for this upcoming holiday weekend or will be traveling across the Midwest.
