[February 03, 2012]  (AP)  A strong winter storm will spread across the central U.S., as a low pressure system moves off the Rocky Mountains and into the Plains on Friday.

The systeHardwarem that brought heavy snow to the central Rockies and Great Basin will advance eastward into the central Plains. Flow around this system will obtain additional moisture and energy from the Gulf of Mexico, bringing a wide range of precipitation to the central U.S.

Expect cool temperatures to produce snow showers from Colorado through Iowa, while warmer temperatures will allow for rain showers to develop from Texas through the mid- and lower Mississippi River Valley.

A blizzard warning has been issued from Colorado through Kansas as strong winds will produce whiteout conditions. Expect up to 12 inches of new snow in these areas, with strong winds from 20 to 35 mph. Take caution while traveling across the central Plains on Friday.

The southern edge of this system will be capable of producing scattered thunderstorms, some of which may turn severe. There is a slight risk of severe development in northeastern Texas, southern Oklahoma and southeastern Arkansas. Expect periods of heavy rainfall, strong winds and large hail in these areas.

Elsewhere, high pressure will dominate the East Coast and West Coast on Friday. This will allow for dry and sunny conditions to return to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. In the West, warm and sunny conditions will persist as high pressure creates offshore flow, pushing clouds and moisture away. Expect areas of valley fog to develop in the interiors in the morning hours.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday have ranged from a morning low of 1 below at Pinedale, Wyo., to a high of 82 degrees at Plant City, Fla.
