"There are so many questions with diabetes, and just when you
think you know it all, you realize there's something you need to
learn," he said. "This is an ongoing puzzle."
That's why he plans to attend the Diabetes & You event on
Saturday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
Anyone who has diabetes or is at risk of developing diabetes is
welcome to attend this event, which will offer comprehensive
education about diabetes and its causes, diagnosis, prevention and
treatment, plus tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
John Wahab, M.D., with Family Medical Center of Lincoln, part of
Memorial Physician Services, will offer a keynote presentation at 9
a.m. in the Steinfort Conference Rooms. Free screenings will be
provided in the Wombacher Community Room, and fasting for 12 hours
(or at least eight hours) is preferred for the most accurate
results. Snacks will be served in the Woods Café.
Diabetes & You also includes mini-seminars on various topics:
understanding screening values, presented by Kat Tucholke, APN;
exercise, with Todd Mourning, PT, DPT, of the hospital's rehab
staff; cooking, with Jennifer DiPasquale, RD, LD, CDE; and behavior
modification, with Jude Clapper, MS, RD, LDN, CDE.
"There are a lot of people who can benefit from this event. And
there are people who can take back control of their diabetes and
even put off insulin dependence as John did for a number of years,"
Mourning said.
The event is presented in conjunction with Healthy Communities
Partnership, Memorial Physician Services and Memorial Counseling
Associates. It is funded in part through the Health Resources and
Services Administration's Office of Rural Health Policy.

"Addressing the prevalence and growth of diabetes has been
identified as a community health need for Logan County," said Kristi
Lessen, director of Healthy Communities Partnership. "We invite
anyone who wants to learn more about diabetes to come to this event
and learn about the ways they can have a positive impact on their
own health."
All participants who attend every session and participate in
screenings will receive a complimentary diabetic cookbook and be
entered into a drawing for a free Kindle Fire.
Please RSVP to Diabetes & You by sending an email to
