 The doors officially opened at 11 a.m. at Friendship Manner,
and within just a few minutes, folks were making their way into the
dining room for some good food and fellowship.Around the room,
HLSC volunteers were doing various chores, from selling
animal-themed sweatshirts to taking money for lunch, manning the
bake sale tables and several just waiting to help clear tables and
prepare them for the next round of guests.
Also on hand was Darlene Begolka, manning a table with Tupperware
products on display. She said the items she sold on Saturday were
earmarked for the profits to go to the HSLC to help support their
efforts in Logan County.
Ellen Burbage, director of the organization, was in the building,
keeping a watchful eye on everything and helping out where needed.
While working at the sweatshirt table with Sue Jones, Natalie Miller
and Adrienne Hahn, she took time out to talk about the fundraisers
the HSLC will have this year.
The soup luncheon Saturday is one of two food events the
organization hosts annually, with the other being a pancake
breakfast in January. There are also plans for six dog washes this
year and the annual Ales for Tails event.
In addition, Burbage said the organization is adding another big
event in May.
The HSLC will host a garage sale at the Logan County Fairgrounds
on May 12. Burbage said the event will be at the beer tent,
beginning at 7 a.m. and running all day, with plans to close up at
4.
Beginning in March, the organization will start asking for
donations of clean, gently used items for the sale. There will be
designated days for folks to drop off their donations, and more
information on that will be listed in Lincoln Daily News as the
dates approach. Burbage said they will also make arrangements to
pick up items if the donor cannot deliver them.
In addition to the garage sale, Burbage said plans are being made
for other activities at the same time, such as food sales, face
painting for the kids and more to be announced later.
The
HSLC garage sale will coincide with the Route 66 Miles of Smiles
sale, which currently is slated for May 11 and 12.

The Humane Society of Logan County was formed in April of 2006.
Their mission includes working to prevent animal cruelty, abuse and
neglect; promotion of proper placement (adoption) of animals;
striving to resolve the overpopulation of animals; and educating the
public about humane treatment of animals.
In 2010 the organization received $200,000 from the Hoelscher
Trust, which they used to build a shelter on the city's north side.
The shelter officially opened in the spring of 2011.
The manpower at the shelter is provided through volunteers, but
funds are needed to provide for the care of the animals and the
maintenance of the new building.
Anyone who is interested in supporting the HSLC need not wait for
a special event. The organization will happily accept cash donations
or donations of pet foods at any time. Donations can be made in
