[February 16, 2012]  (AP)  A trough of low pressure will continue moving through the eastern U.S. on Thursday.

As the trough progresses, the storm system in the central and southern Plains will lift northeastward into the upper Great Lakes, while its associated cold front swings eastward and reaches through the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast by the evening. This transition will bring areas of showers and thunderstorms to the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states and a wintry mix of rain and snow showers to the Northeast, Midwest and Great Lakes.

In the West, two systems will create more rain and mountain snow showers.

First, the low pressure system that dropped across southern California and Nevada will continue southeastward through Arizona with rain. Rain will mix with high-elevation snow in parts of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico as the system drops into Mexico.

Meanwhile, a second disturbance will approach the Pacific Northwest with periods of rain showers and mountain snow.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of minus 7 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 84 degrees at Harlingen, Texas.
