This
week travelers coming in off Interstate 55 began supporting
local schools through a 1 percent sales tax that applies to
convenience items, among other things. The new sales tax will
produce much-needed revenue for schools and a reduction in
property taxes for area residents. The story is in today's
edition.

In
this file photo from April 26, 2007, British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking is assisted
off the tarmac at the Kennedy Space Center
by his carer, Monica Guy, as he is applauded
by members of the flight crew after
completing a zero-gravity flight in Cape
Canaveral, Fla. Hawking has decoded some of the most
puzzling mysteries of the universe, but he
has left one mystery for others to explain:
how he managed to survive so long with such
a crippling disease. The physicist and
cosmologist was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's
disease, or motor neuron disease, when he
was a 21-year-old student at Cambridge
University. Most people die within a few
years of the disease being identified. On
Sunday, Hawking will turn 70.

Louise
Bertsche
celebrated her
100th birthday
on Dec. 29 by
doing something
she had done
hundreds of
times in the
past. She played
her bedpan banjo
with the Kitchen
Band, an
unconventional
group of folks
who play
everything from
the piano to
teapots.
Friends and
family gathered
to wish her well
as she
celebrated this
milestone in her
life. And Louise
responded in her
trademark
way … with a wink
and a nod. And
always a big
smile.
Congratulations,
Louise, on an
amazing 100
years. Here’s to
the next
century!
