[January 03, 2012]  A common myth during the flu season is that you can get the flu from the flu shot. This is not true. The influenza vaccine is made from inactivated (killed) viruses, and it is not possible to catch an illness from a dead virus.

One reason people believe this myth is because of the side effects that can occur from the flu shot. Possible side effects include a low-grade fever, aches, soreness or redness where the shot was given. These symptoms may not be comfortable, but they are a reaction to the shot and not a sign of infection. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu is to get a flu shot.

The hours for vaccines at the health department are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. No appointment is required. The influenza vaccine will also be available on the HOPE Mobile during its regularly scheduled stops.

The cost of the seasonal flu shot is $30 for adults, $16.75 for children 6 months through 18 years of age who have no health insurance or health insurance that doesn't cover vaccines, and free to those with a Medicaid or Medicare card.
