Wet weather causes 2 local accidents

[January 27, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- The following report was released by Illinois State Police District 9:

Incidents: Traffic crashes

Location: Old U.S. Route 66 at Atlanta in northern Logan County

Date, time:

  • Crash 1 -- Jan. 26 at approximately 3:18 p.m.

  • Crash 2 -- Jan. 26 at approximately 3:53 p.m.

Assisting agencies: Illinois State Police, Logan County Sheriff’s Department, Atlanta Fire and Rescue, Logan County Paramedics, Lincoln Fire Department and Lincoln Rural Fire

Individuals involved:

  • Crash 1 -- Unit 1, male driver

  • Crash 2 -- Unit 1, male driver; Unit 2, female driver

Narrative: The Illinois State Police responded to two separate traffic crashes on Old U.S. Route 66 near Atlanta.

Crash 1 -- Unit 1 was traveling Old Route 66 northbound at 2500th Avenue, south of Atlanta. Unit 1 lost control on wet pavement and started to skid. The driver overcorrected and drove off the right side of the road, striking the side of a utility pole. The vehicle then skidded across both lanes of traffic, driving into a creek on the west side of Old Route 66, down a 15-foot embankment. Lincoln Fire Department, Atlanta Fire and Rescue, and Logan County Paramedics used rappelling gear to lift the driver to safety due to the steep embankment. The driver refused any further medical treatment and received a citation for driving too fast for conditions.

Crash 2 -- Unit 1 was stopped at the stop sign on 2400th Street westbound at Old Route 66. Unit 2 was traveling Old Route 66 southbound. The driver of Unit 1 proceeded from the stop sign and failed to yield to the oncoming vehicle. Unit 1 struck Unit 2 in the side. The driver of Unit 2 was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of Unit 1 received a citation for failure to yield at an intersection.
