Driver cited for under minimum speed limit in I-155 crash

[January 31, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois State Police District 9 released the following report on an accident Monday evening on Interstate 155:

Incident: Personal injury crash with partial lane blockage

Location: Interstate 155 southbound at mile post 9

Date, time: Jan. 30, 7:17 p.m.

Vehicles and individuals involved:

  • Unit 1 -- 1993 Ford Econoline van, white
    Driver: John A. Poole, 79-year-old male, Springfield

  • Unit 2 -- 2000 Buick LeSabre, silver
    Driver: Clarence E. Smith, 79-year-old male, Oakford

Assisting agencies: Illinois State Police District 9, Logan County Sheriff's Department, Hartsburg-Emden Fire Department, Lincoln Rural Fire Department

Narrative:

Unit 1 was traveling in the right lane of I-155 southbound, at mile post 9. Unit 1 was traveling under the minimum posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Unit 2 was also traveling southbound on I-155 and was unable to avoid Unit 1. Unit 2 struck the rear end of Unit 1.

The driver of Unit 1 refused treatment. The driver of Unit 2 was transported to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of Unit 1 was cited for violating the minimum posted speed limit.

Both lanes of I-155 southbound were closed for 30 minutes due to the crash.
