[July 07, 2012]  DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- An Iowa man has completed a 1,037-mile run around Lake Michigan.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/LBxix2) that Steve Cannon of Des Moines completed the last leg of his 40-day, 40-marathon trek on Thursday. The 46-year-old real estate agent ran clockwise around the lake, logging 26 miles a day.

After several days of triple-digit heat, a thunderstorm greeted him in the final 15 minutes of his run along Chicago's Lake Shore Drive. He started and ended his trek at Harry Caray's Tavern in downtown Chicago.

Cannon says the greatest challenge of his run was mental -- that he had to shut out the world and focus on each step.

His run raised $32,000 for cancer research.
