[July 11, 2012]  NEW YORK (AP) -- USA Today named David Callaway, the head of financial news website MarketWatch, editor-in-chief on Tuesday.

Callaway will replace John Hillkirk, who stepped down in November to help oversee investigative reporting projects as a senior editor.

In May, Gannett Co., the owner of USA Today, named media industry veteran Larry Kramer as USA Today's president and publisher. Kramer was founding president of CBS Digital Media and helped create MarketWatch, which is now owned by News Corp.

Callaway will take over USA Today's content strategy at a time when the newspaper is turning its focus toward digital products such as mobile news applications for tablet computers and smartphones. Like other newspapers, USA Today has been trying to increase revenue from its digital operations as print circulation declines.

USA Today is the nation's second-largest newspaper with a print circulation of 1.8 million.
