[July 12, 2012]  (AP)  Expect another hot day for the western U.S., the Southeast will remain rainy, and showers and thunderstorms move into the Dakotas on Thursday.

A trough of low pressure will move off the northern Rockies and into the northern Plains. This system will push a cold front eastward, which will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe over the Dakotas, with large hail and strong winds being the main concern. Just west of this activity, a ridge of high pressure continues building over the West Coast. Expect highs to approach 120 degrees across the deserts of southern California and Arizona; thus, excessive heat warnings will remain in effect for the region. In the Southwest, monsoonal moisture lingers over the Four Corners, kicking up more scattered showers and thunderstorms across Colorado and New Mexico.

In the East, wet weather persists across the Southeast as a front lingers over the region. At the same time, onshore flow continues from the Gulf of Mexico which feeds more moisture and energy in from the south. This will produce more heavy rains and thunderstorms from eastern Texas through the Carolinas. Rainfall totals will range from 2 to 4 inches across the region again on Thursday. Flooding will remain of concern as the region has seen heavy rainfall for the past few days.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 41 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 107 degrees at Needles, Calif.
