Firehouse news for June

[July 21, 2012]  Following is a copy of the report submitted by Lincoln Fire Department Chief Mark Miller to the Lincoln City Council members in July for the month of June 2012.

Emergency and fire related activities

Emergency Runs included the Lincoln Firefighters responding to 197 responses including: 7 Structure Fires, 1 car fire, 10 rubbish fires, 5 motor vehicle crashes, and 8 alarm activations.

Fire related runs: 57

EMS related runs: 135

Rescue related runs: 5

Non-Emergency activities

Fire Inspectors for the month of June have been following up fire safety inspections and code enforcement. The following facilities were visited: Salvation Army, State Bank of Lincoln, 519 N Kickapoo, Lincoln Banquet Center, D&D Sewer, Comfort Inn, Budget Inn, NAPA, Halle’s, Court House, Big R and Hardees.

Fire Prevention activities included fire extinguisher training for employees at Lawrence Place, a residence for the Mentally Disabled. Inspectors reviewed fire safety plans with children at 705 S McLean after there was a fire in their home.

Lieutenants have conducted plan reviews at the following facilities to ensure safe response when notified of an emergency: Heartland Community College, Comcast, Illinois American Water, Fire Apparatus Supply Team, Ace Hardware, Faith Assembly of God Church and Castle Manor.

Firefighter Training

Captains had conducted training for the firefighters on topics such as Single company response and fire suppression, MABAS Tent Deployment, Hazardous materials response and decontamination, EOC operations for Incident Command, Boat Operations for surface victim removal from water hazards and EMS respiratory assessment and a review of lung sounds for various medical conditions.

Maintenance of the station and apparatus

Station repairs: Lincoln Fire Department received a grant to complete the safety floor in apparatus bays 3 and4. Due to the extreme heat our air conditioners units have been serviced and are barely keeping up.

The new used command vehicle was placed in service in June just in time for our busy fire activity. Lettering has been started and we are recycling emergency lighting and radios from the old command car.

Maintenance of all fire apparatus has been conducted and rear end differential repair were needed once again on 5102, this repair was covered by warranty. Several of the repairs to 5101 were covered by a recall credit for service from the truck manufacturer.

Administration

Lincoln Fire Department members and management would like to thank the many citizens that have recently sent thank you letters for emergency service and for the support for the purchase of a command vehicle and a new fire engine. Lincoln Fire Fighters are proud to serve our community and its visitors. Thanks!
