[July 25, 2012]  PETERSBURG -- "America's first breed" will be the subject of Morgan horse demonstrations Saturday at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site near Petersburg. The event is free and open to the public.

The Mississippi Valley Morgan Horse Club will present demonstrations of the Morgan horse at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the field south of Dr. John Allen's home. The demonstrations will begin with the story of Justin Morgan, the music teacher who owned the breed's foundation stallion, and will feature the historic role of the Morgan in the westward expansion, farm work and recreational activities of the young nation and during the Civil War. Also included will be demonstrations of modern uses of the Morgan, including trail riding, dressage, endurance riding, English pleasure, western pleasure and hunt seat.

There will also be ongoing horse activities to observe, a variety of free educational materials for all ages, and an opportunity to visit with club members and get up close to the beautiful Morgans.
