Burgrabe's Eagles sweep Holland Barry & Bennett

[June 06, 2012]  Burgrabe's Eagles continued their early season success by sweeping Holland Barry & Bennett at Breezy Field in Lincoln. In the opener, the Eagles won 14-2 and came from behind to win the nightcap 12-8.

In game one, the Eagles scored in the first on a walk to Danielle Burgrabe, followed by a single by Brooklyn Hermes. Sydney Johnson had an RBI single, followed by an RBI single by Rachel Podbelsek. HB&B scored on a walk and single in the bottom of the first.

The Eagles exploded in the second inning, ignited by a walk to Kalyn Roberts; a single by Grace Hemenway; a two-RBI single by Burgrabe, who then scored on a passed ball; a walk to Hermes; a single by Johnson; an RBI single by Podbelsek; and an RBI walk to Heather Curry. HB&B failed to score.

In the third, Katie Hunsley singled, Kalyn Roberts singled, and both were driven home on an Alexis Van Hook double. Hemenway and Burgrabe followed with RBI singles, and the action continued with an RBI double by Hermes, a single by Johnson and an RBI single by Tori Tripplett. HB&B scored on a single and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the third.

Neither team scored in the fourth and the game ended.

Heather Curry pitched a two-hitter to secure the victory.

Game two played out much differently. The Eagles scored in the first on a single by Hemenway and an RBI single by Johnson. HB&B scored on an RBI single by Emma Nepolello.

The Eagles were able to plate two runs in the second after a single by Curry and an RBI single by Hunsley, who then scored on a passed ball. Katie Hunsley was the starting pitcher for the Eagles but was unable to complete the second inning. HB&B scored seven runs total on only one hit.

Now trailing 8-3, the Eagles were able to pull even on a walk to Burgrabe; a triple by Hermes; a two-run homer by Johnson; a strikeout by Podbelsek, who was able to beat out the play to first on the dropped third strike and then scored on a passed ball; a walk to Curry; and an RBI single by Mya Roberts. Heather Curry, who had appeared in relief, was able to hold HB&B scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, despite HB&B loading the bases.

With the game now tied, Van Hook singled, Hemenway doubled, Burgrabe followed with the game-winning RBI single, and security runs were added on an RBI single by Hermes and RBIs from Johnson and Podbelsek. In the bottom half of the inning, with runners on first and second, HB&B hit a liner to Hunsley, who caught it, stepped on second, and the game came to an end.

Curry, in relief, allowed just one run and was the winning pitcher, running her record to 3-0.
