[June 07, 2012]  Monday evening, Boy Scouts Caleb Papach and Allan Huff attended the voting session of the Lincoln City Council to talk about "ScoutSweep." Papach is this year's ScoutSweep coordinator and Huff is the assistant coordinator.

This year's cleanup event by the Scouts will be on June 16, starting at 8:30 a.m. and running to noon.

This is the fifth year the local Scouts have conducted a ScoutSweep day in Lincoln.

Their morning will begin at Latham Park at 8:30. Scouts will gather for a hot breakfast sandwich provided by Hardee's, then have their flag ceremony at 9. After the ceremony, the Scouts will split up into groups, and with trash bags in hand, will walk the streets of the downtown area picking up trash.

At noon they will meet up again at Latham Park for lunch provided by Subway, Jimmy John's and Bonanza.

The event this year is being organized by a brand-new Boy Scout troop. Troop 111 of the Boy Scouts is an evolution of Cub Scout Pack 111. As the boys have aged out of the Cub Scout program, a need was seen for starting a new troop of Boy Scouts.

According to Jason Shafer, one of the leaders of Troop 111, there are currently six boys registered as members and seven more who will be registering in the very near future.

Shafer said the planning and organizing of the event this year was left entirely up to Papach and Huff. They have been responsible for securing donations for the day, such as the breakfast and lunch products the kids will enjoy. Monday night they also spoke with Alderwoman Kathy Horn, who is the good-will ambassador for Kroger in Lincoln, and secured donations of bottled water.

Shafer said they have also contacted other businesses in Lincoln and have sought out donations for all the supplies they will need. He said there is a long list of area businesses that have been very supportive of the group in this annual event.

The city council unanimously approved allowing the Scouts to deposit their collected trash in the city dumpster behind City Hall.

During the discussion, Alderman David Armbrust asked the boys if they would have a rain date for the event. The boys drew a chuckle from the council when they responded that Scouts could work in rain.

On a more serious note, the boys were commended by Alderwoman Jonie Tibbs, who said she thought it was a wonderful thing the Scouts do each year for the city. Several others nodded in agreement.

After the meeting, the boys also commented, saying all the Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops in the county have been invited to participate, and in addition, any member of the general public who would like to join in is welcome.
