 Incident: Fatal crash
Location: U.S. Route 136 westbound, 2.5 miles east of Havana

Sheriff’s Department, Havana Rural Fire Department
Narrative: Unit 2 was driving west on U.S. Route 136
approximately 2.5 miles east of Havana. Unit 1 was driving in the
same direction on Route 136 and approaching Unit 2 from behind. The
driver of Unit 1 said he leaned over to pick up his cellular phone.
When he looked back up at the road, he was too close to Unit 2 to
avoid crashing into it. Unit 1 crashed into the rear of Unit 2.

The driver of Unit 2 was pronounced dead at the scene by the
Mason County coroner's office. The Unit 2 passenger was transported
by helicopter to Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he
was later pronounced dead by the Peoria County coroner's office. The
driver of Unit 1 was not injured.
Traffic citations for the driver of Unit 1 are pending the
outcome of the crash investigation.
