2 die in Mason County accident

[June 09, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- The following accident report was released by Illinois State Police:

Incident: Fatal crash

Location: U.S. Route 136 westbound, 2.5 miles east of Havana

Date, time: June 8, 12:05 p.m.

Vehicles and individuals involved:

  • Unit 1: 2007 Mack tractor-trailer, green and yellow

    • Unit 1 driver: Gregory Orr, 28, Hull

  • Unit 2: 1972 International Hydro farm tractor, red

    • Unit 2 driver, deceased: Nyal Miller, 77, Mason City

    • Unit 2 passenger, deceased: Kirk Schoonover, 22, Havana

Assisting agencies: Illinois State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Department, Havana Rural Fire Department

Narrative: Unit 2 was driving west on U.S. Route 136 approximately 2.5 miles east of Havana. Unit 1 was driving in the same direction on Route 136 and approaching Unit 2 from behind. The driver of Unit 1 said he leaned over to pick up his cellular phone. When he looked back up at the road, he was too close to Unit 2 to avoid crashing into it. Unit 1 crashed into the rear of Unit 2.

The driver of Unit 2 was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mason County coroner's office. The Unit 2 passenger was transported by helicopter to Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he was later pronounced dead by the Peoria County coroner's office. The driver of Unit 1 was not injured.

Traffic citations for the driver of Unit 1 are pending the outcome of the crash investigation.
