 This weekend, 'Party Like It's
2012' with Relay for Life
"Party Like It's 2012!" is the theme of the 2012 Relay for Life of Logan
County.
As we celebrate another birthday,
especially in the lives of our survivors, we strive to eliminate
this dreaded disease for all humanity.
The money raised through
the Relay for Life goes to support the American Cancer Society. The
American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a
century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer,
with more than 100,000 volunteers in Illinois and millions elsewhere
taking up this fight to ensure more birthdays.
In 2011 the Logan County event had 36 teams that raised $78,185.
This included 1,325 luminaries that lined the Lincoln Center walkway
as participants remembered those who had fought the disease and also
those who walk as survivors.
This year, to commemorate the 15th Relay for Life in Logan
County, organizers hope to light 1,500 luminaries to celebrate. A
three-time survivor, Ruth Ann Hieronymus, is the honorary chair.
Luminaries are $10 each and can be purchased in memory of one who
has fought the fight and is now at rest or in honor of one who is
continuing to fight and is a survivor.
The luminaries will be lit at 9 p.m. on Friday and will be left
glowing until the end of the event. They are available from any team
member or at the gate until 9 that night.

Logan County Relay for Life schedule of events
Wednesday, 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m.: Culver's for Relay
Ten percent of all sales that day go to fight cancer in Logan
County.
Friday: Survivor buffet at the old gymnasium at Lincoln College
Reminder to all survivors: The survivor buffet, hosted by John
Guzzardo, will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday in the old gym of
Lincoln College. All survivors are welcome to attend, even if they
did not receive an invitation. If you did not receive an invitation,
call the survivor chair, Tonita Reifsteck, at 217-855-1645 to
register.
On Friday night the Lincoln Center at Lincoln College will be
transformed into "Party Like It's 2012" activities relating to the
Relay for Life of Logan County.
There will be activities, a silent auction and food available for
the 12 hours of the event, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and ending
with a balloon release at 6 a.m. Saturday. Anyone can participate,
even if they are not officially on a team.

blood supply for the region, Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, 200 Stahlhut
Drive, is hosting a blood drive on the CICBC donor bus on Thursday, June 14.

Central Illinois Community Blood Center, a not-for-profit
organization, is the provider of life-saving blood for 12 hospitals
throughout central Illinois, including Memorial Medical Center and
St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. CICBC is a division of the
Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, which collects over
180,000 units of blood annually and serves 80 hospitals in Illinois,
Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin.
Entries
with recycled materials
sought for Logan County Fair
The Logan County Joint
Solid Waste Agency and the Lincoln Woman's Club are again sponsoring a
recycled materials medium in the Fine Arts Division at the Logan County
Fair. The medium will include recycled materials such as glass, metal,
plastics, wood and paper. Artists are encouraged to use their imaginations
in their choice of recycled materials and the application of those materials
in an art project.
Recycled materials artwork will be
sponsored in the following age divisions: adults, 18 years and over;
young people, 13-17 years; and children, 10-12 years. Entries must
be made to the Logan County Fair office by 4:30 p.m. July 25.
Artwork must be delivered to the Fine Arts Exhibition Building
between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. July 30.
Award premiums for the artwork are
being furnished from proceeds generated by the monthly glass
collections co-sponsored by the Joint Solid Waste Agency and the
Lincoln Woman's Club.

Lincoln Church of the Nazarene
to host 'Parents Night Out'
The Lincoln Church of the Nazarene will host a "Parents Night Out," with
three sessions available the last weekend in June. The event will give parents an
opportunity to enjoy three hours out at any place of their
choosing.
Meanwhile, children ages 4-10 are invited to the
church, which will be transformed into the Starlight Space
Center, where they will enjoy a "Galactic Adventure with God" and
will be entered in a drawing for a new bike. There will be food,
activities and fun at no cost to the parents.
The church hopes to give the first 10 couples who sign up a gift
certificate to one of the local restaurants.
The dates and times are Thursday and Friday, June 28 and 29,
5:30-8:30 p.m., and Saturday, June 30, from noon until 3 p.m.

ZLS May Students of the Month
Claire Conrady and Sydney Johnson, seventh-graders at Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln, have been
selected as the Zion Lutheran School May Students of the Month.
Sydney has been an honor roll student,
and her ZLS activities have included basketball, volleyball, track,
band, choir and speech team.
Sydney attends Faith Lutheran Church. Her church and community
activities have included Sunday school, trapshooting, bow and arrow,
swimming, and softball. Sydney's favorite activities are playing
volleyball and reading.
Her parents are Kim and Lisa
Johnson of Lincoln.
Claire has been an honor roll student
and her ZLS activities have included band, choir chimes, choir,
speech team, volleyball and track.
Claire attends Faith Lutheran
Church. Her church and community activities have included Girl
Scouts, dance, Lincoln Extreme club volleyball and piano.
Claire most enjoys clog and tap
dancing.

Sam Opperman achieves rank of Eagle Scout
Sam Opperman, a junior at Lincoln Community High School, has
achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Lincoln Boy Scout Troop 1102.
He was honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor May 12 at Zion
Lutheran Church.
Scoutmaster Robert Cox presented Sam with his Eagle Badge, and
Cpl. James Harnacke of the Marine Corps League presented him with
the Good Citizenship Award during the Court of Honor.
Sam joined the Scouting program in first grade as a Tiger Cub. He
continued in Cub Scouts, then Boy Scouts, where he earned 45 merit
badges on his way to Eagle Scout.
Sam completed his Eagle service project at Zion Lutheran School.
Through the generosity of the members of Zion Lutheran Church,
school and the Lincoln community, Sam led his troop in landscaping
the entrance to the school, assembling and mounting two heavy-gauge
steel benches, and mounting a cross salvaged during the renovation
of Zion Lutheran Church. The troop also mounted two outdoor
basketball poles, backboards and hoops.
Sam has participated in the National Youth Leadership training at
Ingersoll Scout Reservation, served in numerous leadership roles for
his troop, backpacked through the mountains of the Philmont Scout
Ranch in New Mexico and the mountains of the Ben Delatour Scout
Ranch in Colorado. He has also walked from New Salem to Springfield
six times with his troop during the Lincoln Pilgrimage. He also
received the Order of the Arrow, reaching Brotherhood designation.
Samuel is the son of David and Stephanie Opperman of Lincoln. His
grandparents are Ruth Opperman and the late George V. Opperman of
Lincoln and Bobetta Kolbus and the late Raymond Kolbus of Normal.
Lincoln College to host
basketball camp for girls
Lincoln College will host a
basketball camp June 25-28 for girls in first to eighth grade. Sessions will
be in the Jack Nutt Arena in the Lincoln Center.
The camp will focus on fundamental
skill development.
Girls in
first to fourth grade will attend from 10 a.m. to noon, and girls in
fifth to eighth grade will go from 1 until 3 p.m.
The camp is $40 per person and $20
for additional siblings. Forms are available in the Lincoln Center
if needed.

Pulaski Courthouse to host quilt show -- exhibitors wanted
MOUNT PULASKI -- The Mount Pulaski Courthouse
Foundation is sponsoring a quilt show Sept. 8 and 9, during the Mount
Pulaski Fall Festival. The quilts will be displayed at the Mount Pulaski
Courthouse from noon to 8 p.m. on Sept. 8 and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 9. All quilts are welcome. If you wish to
exhibit a quilt, call the courthouse at 217-792-3919 between noon
and 4 p.m. daily, Tuesday through Saturday, to obtain a quilt entry
form and guidelines. Quilt entry forms are also available at many
area shops and libraries. All entry forms are due by Aug. 15.
Awards will be provided for first, second and third places. The
awards will be based on votes by all visitors.
Each quilt displayed has a unique story to tell. The quilt
pictured was made on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South
Dakota. It was won in a basketball tournament by Terry Middletent, from
the Lower Brule Reservation. When Pastor Barbara Stroud-Borth left
her seminary internship on the Lower Brule Lakota Reservation, Terry
and his wife, Mary Jane, gave it to her to honor and thank her for
the year she lived and worked with the people of Lower Brule.
A committee of volunteers is putting on the quilt show to help
raise money for the courthouse restoration. Any and all donations
are greatly appreciated.

Pulaski CUD 23 preschool openings
MOUNT PULASKI -- Mount Pulaski Grade School
has openings in its preschool program for the 2012-2013 school year.
The program guidelines are:

Kevin
Michael Barker of Lincoln earns Eagle Scout
Kevin Michael Barker, son of Llyle and Sue
Barker of Lincoln, was honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony at
Lincoln Christian Church on Sunday. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 1102
in Lincoln and just completed his freshman year at Lincoln Community High
School. During his nine-year Scouting career, Kevin has advanced through
Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, earning 28 merit badges on
his way to Eagle Scout. The rank of Eagle is earned by 2 to 4
percent of Boy Scouts each year. He successfully led the troop in a
project to build 12 park benches for Little Galilee Christian Camp
in Clinton, a camp that he has been a part of and has been inspired
by.
Kevin has also participated in National Youth Leadership
training at Ingersoll Scout Reservation. He has served as senior
patrol leader for the troop and has been inducted into the Order of
the Arrow honor society. This summer he plans to complete a
two-week, 62-mile backpacking trek through the mountains of New
Mexico with members of his troop.
Troop 1102 Scoutmaster Robert Cox presented Kevin with his Eagle
Badge during the Court of Honor.
After graduating from Lincoln Community High School, Kevin hopes
to enter the medical field.
Delavan to host Civil War re-enactment
battle June 30-July 1
DELAVAN -- The inaugural
Little Crane Creek Civil War re-enactment battle will be on June 30 and July
1 at the Lake Park in Delavan. It is one of many events in Delavan in
conjunction with the city's175th birthday. The re-enactment is free and open
to the public.Re-enactors representing both
the North and South will participate in a battle scheduled for 3
p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The
weekend will also include an appearance by President Abraham
Lincoln, Civil War storyteller Brett Hall and Civil War songs by Bob
Welch. On Saturday evening there will be a period dance featuring
the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regiment Band.
Scholarships
available at Community Action
Community Action is accepting applications for $1,000 Community Services
Block Grant scholarships. The CSBG scholarships, offered in cooperation with
the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, are designed
to provide financial assistance to low-income and disadvantaged individuals
of high academic attainment or potential. Scholarships will go toward
providing formal education or occupational training in an accredited
Illinois educational institution to CSBG-eligible clients.
To be considered, applicants must be income-eligible and reside
in DeWitt, Fulton, Logan, Mason, Menard or Piatt counties, and must
be enrolled or accepted at an Illinois accredited higher educational
or occupational training institute.
Applications will be accepted through June 15. Interested
applicants should visit their local Community Action office or
contact Kathy Shepherd, community services director, at

Harvest
of Talents Princess Tea planned for June 30
Harvest of Talents for World Hunger
and Lincoln Christian Church are sponsoring a Princess Tea again
this year for young ladies ages 3-13. The event will be on June 30
at the Lincoln Christian Church Fellowship Hall. Doors will open at
10:45 a.m., and the tea is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The theme of the event will be "Secret Garden." Young ladies are
invited to dress in whatever makes them feel pretty. Tea will be
served on decorated tables and entertainment will be provided. There
will also be time allowed for photo ops.
Tickets go on sale May 1. Seating is limited. For more
details and to make reservations, contact Vera Thomas at the church
office.
Young ladies are to be accompanied by a chaperone, such as their
mother, grandmother, aunt or friend.
Lincoln Christian Church is located at 204 N. McLean St. in
Lincoln.
All proceeds from the Princess Tea will go the 2012 Harvest of
Talents for World Hunger, to feed hungry people worldwide.
