Another incident that occurred
during the mock disaster drills involved hazardous materials, specifically
dangerous chemicals. Once again, first responders had to react
to what they saw and take the necessary steps to assure the safety
of the public and assist those who were suffering.

Part of the disaster training and practice
focused on those who would be responsible for keeping the public
informed as to what was going on. These were the people who
were working behind the scenes, gathering information and deciding
how to present it so as not to cause a panic.

Because many of these things were happening
inside the city of Lincoln, it would be the role of the Lincoln
mayor, Keith Snyder, to lead the address to the media and share what
he could about what was going on in the city.

When disasters happen, no matter where, the
first priority to to tell the public as much as possible without
compromising any ongoing or future criminal investigations. Here Snyder reads from a statement that has been carefully prepared
to fill that requirement.

Rick Aylesworth of the Logan County Board also
spoke to the media, telling them Logan County had been declared to be
in a state of emergency.
