Saturday the local Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops gathered at Latham Park to begin their fifth annual ScoutSweep day in Lincoln.

The group started their day with breakfast provided by Hardee's and Mel-O-Cream. After breakfast they participated in the Scout flag ceremony, then dispersed to various parts of the city to do some cleanup work.

The Girl Scouts went out to the area around Bonanza and McDonald's and did cleanup work there. One set of Scouts went to the north end of town and did cleanup work around the abandoned Citgo station as well as McEntire Roofing and Legends.

Others stayed in the downtown area and gathered trash around the heart of the city as well as in Latham and Scully parks.

This year for the first time the ScoutSweep was led entirely by a Scout. Caleb Papach, pictured above left, was the coordinator for the event.  Troop leader Jason Schafer commented on the young man's leadership, saying, "Our 17-year-old ScoutSweep coordinator did a fantastic job!"

 

During the flag-raising ceremony, even the smallest of the smallest played a role in raising the flag.
