[June 29, 2012]  At 2:45 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service in Lincoln issued an excessive heat warning in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday. The heat advisory is no longer in effect.

Temperatures: Highs will range from 96 to 108 degrees across central and southeast Illinois. Moderate to high humidity levels will keep heat index readings above the actual air temperatures, peaking from 105 to 110 degrees during mid- to late afternoon. Warm and humid conditions will continue overnight with minimum heat index values staying above 75 degrees.

Effects: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water. Remember not to leave any person or pet in parked vehicles, as temperatures inside will quickly rise to dangerous levels.

Precautionary, preparedness actions: To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heatstroke is an emergency; call 911.

Heat warning: An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures will occur. The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun. Also check up on relatives and neighbors.
