Another March day: Wind gusts over 45 mph today

[March 08, 2012]  The National Weather Service in Lincoln released a wind advisory at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday. Strong winds are expected over a large part of central Illinois today.

A wind advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday for the counties of

Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton, Tazewell, McLean, Schuyler, Mason, Logan, DeWitt, Piatt, Champaign, Vermilion, Cass, Menard, Scott, Morgan, Sangamon, Christian, Macon, Moultrie, Douglas, Coles, Edgar, Shelby, Cumberland, Clark, Effingham, Jasper, Crawford, Clay, Richland and Lawrence, including the cities of Galesburg, Peoria, Bloomington, Normal, Havana, Lincoln, Champaign, Urbana, Danville, Jacksonville, Springfield, Taylorville, Decatur, Charleston, Mattoon, Shelbyville, Effingham, Flora and Lawrenceville.

Timing: Winds will increase through the morning hours and reach advisory criteria from midday through the afternoon hours.

Winds: South winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts above 45 mph will be common.

Impacts: Loose outdoor objects such as lawn furniture and garbage cans will blow around. Driving may be a challenge this afternoon, especially for high-profile vehicles on east-west roads.

Precautionary, preparedness actions: A wind advisory means that sustained winds of 30 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
