[March 20, 2012]  ST. LOUIS -- Illinois State sophomore Laura Canopy, was named the Missouri Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week for the first time in her career, after going 9 for 15 with five RBIs in five games last week for the Redbirds.

Canopy, who is currently on a seven-game hitting streak, opened the week by going 3 for 6 with an RBI in Monday's doubleheader at No. 16/17 Louisville. The Hopedale native carried that momentum into conference play, going 6 for 9 in the conference-opening series at Missouri State, helping ISU to a pair of wins over the Bears. The sophomore first baseman raised her batting average 74 points on the week and currently ranks third on the team with a .324 mark, in addition to her team-best .442 on-base percentage.

Canopy and the Redbirds will be on their home field at Marian Kneer Stadium for the first time this weekend, when they host MVC foe Wichita State in a three-game set beginning at noon Saturday.
