[May 09, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- A student from Lincoln received a statewide award during the annual Illinois History Expo in Springfield on May 3.

"The Illinois History Expo winners represent the state's best history students and teachers. We applaud their dedication, ingenuity and excellence," said Catherine Shannon, acting director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The agency sponsors expo in cooperation with the Chicago Metro History Education Center.

Danielle Burgrabe of Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln won an award from the Illinois organization of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for her project, "Was Illinois Really a Free State?" The award, which comes with a $50 prize, is presented for the best project or paper dealing with a small town's history.

The DAR is composed of members who are descended from Revolutionary War soldiers. The group supports patriotic and community service activities, sponsors the DAR Good Citizen Award, assists with genealogical research, actively volunteers at hospitals for veterans, and has its Manual for Citizenship online.

More than 1,400 junior and senior high school students from across the state participated in the May 3 expo. The students were winners selected during regional history fairs earlier this year.
