American Legion Auxiliary May meeting notes

[May 24, 2012]  The American Legion Auxiliary Post 263 recently had its May meeting.

During the evening there was a memorial service for the following deceased members: LuAnn Froschauer, Lois Kavelman and Viola Jane Yeazle.

The unit donated an additional $100 to the scholarship fund.

Tecia Hennessey, Poppy Days chairman, reminded members about the annual event, which will be on Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. All members are urged to help.

Members were given an update on the upcoming Memorial Day activities, which are open to the public. The Memorial Day service will be at 10:30 a.m., and the post members will serve ham and beans following the service.

The balloon launch will be at 1 p.m. It was reported that currently there are over 2,200 names of veterans to be honored.

Hennessey announced that the cutoff date to submit a veteran's name for a balloon is Friday. She will be at the American Legion till 9 p.m. to take names.

Suzann Lolling, unit president, announced that there will be a "Freedom Pre-Launch Party" at the American Legion on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. for the "workers" for the weekend's festivities.

Lolling also reported that on Memorial Day, the unit will have a bake sale and a 50-50 raffle. Members were reminded that all workers are to be at the Legion at 7 a.m. Monday.

Some upcoming events are:

  • The 17th District spring convention will be on June 2 in Chatsworth.

  • Special Olympics will be at ISU on June 15 and 16.

  • Girls State will be in Charleston June 17-23.

  • The county meeting will be on June 28 at 6:30 in Middletown.

  • The department convention will be July 11-14 in Springfield. The unit's delegates are Marlene Schrader, Dorothy Morrow, Tecia Hennessey and Suzann Lolling.

2012-2013 officers for the unit were elected. They are as follows:

  • President: Tecia Hennessey

  • Vice president: Ann Miller

  • Treasurer: Barb Schoonover

  • Historian: Dorothy Morrow

  • Sergeant at arms: Amy Ingram

Installation for the new officers will be at the June 20 meeting at the Lincoln post.
