[May 30, 2012]  (AP)  A cold front that brought strong thunderstorms to the Northeast on Tuesday will clear the Atlantic coast during the day, leaving clearing skies behind for the most part.

Before the front clears out, some early afternoon thunderstorms are possible from the Mid-Atlantic to coastal New England.

The Mid-Atlantic coast will continue to see clouds and rain as the remains of Tropical Storm Beryl threaten to redevelop into a tropical storm along the North Carolina coast. Tropical storm-force winds are expected to remain out to sea, so the main threat to the region will be continued heavy rainfall.

Portions of the Outer Banks could see rainfall totals exceed 3 inches, while inland areas could potentially see up to 4 inches in some isolated locations.

In the Plains, clouds and some light rain are possible as a weak trough in the jet stream moves through. Some strong thunderstorms could develop in this pattern as well.

In the West, Washington and Oregon will see continued light cloud cover, while the Southwest warms up and remains clear.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of 26 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 99 degrees at Vernon, Texas.
