'Artist in Residence' program at Vachel Lindsay Home features Hugh Moore's paintings and music

[November 17, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- The "Artist in Residence" program at the Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site continues with an exhibit of paintings by Springfield artist Hugh Moore, whose work will be on display in the home Nov. 17-30. Visitors can meet the artist at a public reception Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Moore will be presenting art in a variety of media and premiere a new song, "Rhymes to Be Traded for Bread." The song is in honor of Vachel Lindsay's birthday.

The reception is free and open to the public.

Moore is an artist, composer, poet and the host of WQNA's Saturday morning variety show, "Flyover Zone."

His paintings are colorful, dreamlike images. "I call my stylistic approach 'sur-ruralism,' a combination of empirical reality and imagination, often placed in a Midwestern rural backdrop," Moore says.

The Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site, 603 S. Fifth St. in Springfield, is the birthplace and longtime residence of poet, author and artist Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, 1879-1931. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free public tours.
