For the rest of the month, there will be special activity days going on at local schools, and each week one special kid will get a ride to school in a real fire truck.

The rides to school are the award for winning the annual fire safety poster contest. The four winning posters are currently in the LDN Community section, under Teaching & Learning. They will remain there throughout the month of October.

All the kids enjoyed getting their pictures taken.

Whoops! Who's this? He's not a third-grader, that's for sure. It's one of the firemen, but with all that "gear" we can't tell who.

Inside the firehouse Assistant Chief Steve Dahm led a group on a tour of the building. They began upstairs, where kids got to hear about some of the terrific things on the walls in the hall.  They also learned saw the department memorial to firefighter Bahn and the victims of 9/11.

Back downstairs, they were shown the various bays in the building and some of the special things the department has, such as this special cabinet for fire hoses.

Dahm explains to the kids how the hoses are cleaned and stowed away.
