While the day was meant to be fun, there was also business to conduct for the firefighters. The goal of Fire Safety Month is to teach kids the basic lessons they need to survive if they find themselves in a burning building.

There are also lessons on how to protect themselves from dangerous situations such as fire.

In addition the firefighters use the day to help kids understand that if they are in a burning building, the firefighters will come for them. They also need to know that when the firefighter does come, he won't exactly look like a normal person, and he won't sound like a normal person.

Firefighter Chris Perrine showed the kids the gear he puts on to enter a burning building. Kids got the chance to understand how the firefighters put on their gear, what that gear is and how strange the firemen might look when they come looking for a child in a burning building.

Tim Aper stressed to the kids: When you see or hear me coming, don't hide from me. I'm there to help you, so don't be afraid of me.
