During much of the month of October, you may see big red fire trucks and lots of firefighter activity going on at various schools around town. But don't be too concerned, because more than likely it will be the Lincoln Fire Department conducting one of their many planned visits to area schools during Fire Safety Awareness Month.

The month of activities will kick off this morning with a breakfast at the firehouse for third-grade students of Chester-East Lincoln, followed by a tour of the station. The kickoff selects a different school's students each year to come to the station.

On Tuesday firefighters will visit the home of Gianna Massena, a kindergarten student from Carroll Catholic. They will pick her up in a fire truck and drive her to school. Gianna will get this special treat for being the winner in the kindergarten category of the fire department's fire safety poster contest.

Firefighters will also be at West Lincoln-Broadwell on Tuesday to talk to kids about fire safety and give them a chance to have some fun at the same time.

This year the poster contest brought in a large number of entries. From all the schools in Lincoln, including Carroll Catholic and Zion Lutheran, there were 40 kindergarten entries, 60 entries from first-graders, 80 entries from second-graders and 72 entries from third-graders.

From all those, four winners were chosen, one from each grade level. Below are pictures of their excellent work along with their names and the school they attend.
