[September 10, 2012]  ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Cardinals right fielder Matt Carpenter left Saturday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the third inning after suffering cuts to his hands when his bat broke.

Carpenter singled to left with one out. His bat shattered on the play, which apparently caused lacerations to both of Carpenter's hands. After staying at first base for a few pitches, Carpenter was lifted for pinch-runner Adron Chambers.

The wounds were reported to be superficial and Carpenter is expected to be available for tomorrow's series finale.
