Beekeepers save bees after Ore. crash spills hives

[April 01, 2013]  MADRAS, Ore. (AP) -- It took nearly 12 hours Thursday for beekeepers to collect millions of bees that have been buzzing alongside a highway in Oregon since a truck crash spilled 200 hives.

KGW reports (http://is.gd/PpFMdz) bee apprentices from the Central Oregon Beekeepers Association wore protective gear as they carefully picked up each hive and checked it out.

The crash happened Sunday on Highway 97 north of Madras when the semitrailer transporting the bees swerved to avoid hitting an animal and rolled.

Beekeepers in Central Oregon are checking out the hives to see which need queen bees and what repairs need to be made.
