Diane Hillard-Sembell, MD, to receive national award

[April 03, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- Diane Hillard-Sembell, M.D., specialist with the Springfield Clinic Orthopedic Group, has been chosen as a 2013 recipient of the Honorary Membership Award by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Honorary membership in the association is awarded to individuals who have shown profound interest in and have made significant contributions to the profession of athletic training, displaying a dedication to advancing, promoting and championing the efforts of the association and its members.

The Honorary Membership Award has been awarded to 175 professionals since 1965. In receiving this honor, Dr. Hillard-Sembell joins an elite group of orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physician leaders, researchers and sports medicine business professionals, including James Andrews, M.D., Robert Cantu, M.D., Mary Lloyd Ireland, M.D., and Jack Cramer.

A graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, where she also finished her orthopedic surgery residency, Hillard-Sembell completed a sports medicine fellowship at Kaiser Permanente through the University of California-San Diego. She has been with Springfield Clinic for more than 20 years.

Hillard-Sembell has become well-known for her extensive research in the area of anterior cruciate ligament injuries, and was the first orthopedic surgeon in the area to become board-certified in both orthopedic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine.
