French workers sue Goodyear in Ohio to save jobs

[April 10, 2013]  AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- French workers trying to save their tire-making jobs have sued Goodyear in its Ohio hometown.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Summit County Common Pleas Court in Akron against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. on behalf of workers at its factory in Amiens, France. The suit seeks to block a plant shutdown and win $4 million in damages.

Attorney Robert Gary worked on the filing and says the labor dispute was taken to court in Ohio because corporate decisions were made in Akron.

Goodyear says it hasn't seen the lawsuit.

Goodyear makes tires for everything from cars and trucks to planes and construction equipment. It has been trying to restructure or close its plant in northern France in the face of a shrinking European car market.

The French workers say Goodyear wants to shift the operations to lower-cost China.
