[April 06, 2013] Robert and Bernadine Higgins of Chestnut will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary later this month by spending time with their family and friends.

Robert, an Argenta sailor, married Bernadine
Ater on April 14, 1953, at the Argenta Presbyterian Church.

Their original wedding date was postponed and the wedding cake preserved in a deep freeze when Robert suffered a ruptured appendix just a few days before the wedding.

He was released from the hospital after the
appendectomy, and the couple got their marriage license the next day.

George Higgins, Robert's brother, was the best man, and Betty (Ater) Terrell was maid of honor.

An article in the 1953 newspaper said the couple decided to "dispense with the kneeling" for the benediction.

Robert and Bernadine have four children: Mike (and Anne) Higgins of Kenney, Debbie (and John) Potterfield of Palmyra, Mo., Connie (and John) Romans of Stillwater, Okla., and Jeff (and Debbie) Higgins of Rushville.

They have five grandchildren.
