[August 03, 2013]  WLNX-FM 88.9, the student-operated radio station at Lincoln College, has become only the 23rd college radio station in the United States to be accepted into the iHeartRadio digital streaming platform.

Owned by Clear Channel Broadcasting, iHeartRadio functions as both a music recommender system and a radio network that aggregates content from over 1,000 local radio stations across the United States. With the iHeartRadio affiliation, WLNX -- "89X, Lincoln's New Alternative Rock" -- can now be accessed via a free streaming radio application on Apple iPhones, Androids and BlackBerry devices, as well as the iPad, Xbox 360 console, Sonos and the Roku digital media receiver.

"The iHeartRadio platform represents the new beachfront property in the digital stratosphere," said John Malone, Lincoln College associate professor and WLNX general manager. "We are thrilled to be among the elite group of college radio stations invited to participate."

Malone said iHeartRadio provides a worldwide mobile platform for radio stations like WLNX. While not replacing traditional FM transmission, the platform will continue to become more important as a way to reach a new generation that has grown attached to hand-held mobile devices, similar to the way listeners once used Sony Walkman radios.
