[August 10, 2013]  NEW YORK (AP) -- CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta says he spoke too soon four years ago when he publicly opposed the medical use of marijuana. Now he says he believes the drug can have very real benefits for people with specific health problems.

Gupta, who is a brain surgeon and CNN's chief medical correspondent, detailed his change of heart in an interview Friday. He will narrate a documentary on the topic Sunday night on CNN.

He wrote in Time magazine in 2009 that smoking marijuana isn't going to do your health any good. But he said he was persuaded to look more closely at the issue after meeting a 5-year-old girl from Colorado who saw the number of seizures she was suffering from cut down markedly after she used marijuana.
