Cargo plane crashes in the US

[August 15, 2013]  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- A UPS cargo plane crashed in a field near the Birmingham airport Wednesday, killing the two pilots on board, scattering debris over a wide area and startling nearby residents who heard explosions and saw flames.

The crash is at least the third of a cargo jet this year in the U.S. Other recent crashes include:

March 9, 2013: A commercial cargo plane, a Beechcraft 1900 operated by Ace Air Cargo, crashed while approaching the Dillingham airport in southwest Alaska, killing the pilot and co-pilot.

Jan 15, 2013: A single-engine cargo plane crashed in a wooded area near Pellston in northern Michigan, killing the pilot. The Cessna 208B was being used by Martinaire Aviation, based near Dallas.

July 1, 2012: A military C-130 cargo plane from an Air National Guard wing based in Charlotte, N.C., was fighting a South Dakota wildfire when it crashed in the Black Hills, killing four crew members and injuring two others.

May 2, 2011: A twin-engine cargo plane crashed into a house near an airport in the Miami area, killing the pilot.

Aug. 1, 2010: A large cargo plane crashed near the entrance of Denali National Park in Alaska, killing three people on board, including the pilot. The Fairchild C-123 was owned by All West Freight Inc.

July 28, 2010: Four National Guard airmen died when their C-17 military cargo plane crashed shortly after taking off on a training mission for an air show at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska.

Jan. 22, 2010: Two pilots were missing and presumed dead after their ACE Air Beechcraft 1900C cargo plane crashed in the water shortly after taking off from the airport in Sand Point, Alaska.

Jan. 27, 2009: A FedEx cargo plane landing at an airport in Lubbock, Texas veered off the runway, crashed and caught fire. Both crew members walked away from the ATR-42 twin-turboprop aircraft.

Sept. 1, 2008: A twin-engine 1956 Convair 580 operated by Air Tahoma crashed after leaving Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, killing all three on board.

June 18, 2008: A twin-engine De Havilland C6 cargo plane crashed on takeoff at Barnstable Municipal Airport on Cape Cod, killing the pilot.

May 28, 2008: An Alpine Air Express cargo plane crashed into a warehouse in Billings, Montana, killing the pilot.

Jan. 24, 2008: The pilot was missing and presumed dead after his mail cargo plane, a Beechcraft King Air 1900, went down off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii.

Jan 16, 2008: A twin-engine cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Tulsa International Airport, killing the pilot.

Jan. 24, 2007: Two small cargo planes collided and burned on a taxiway at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, but both pilots escaped without serious injuries.

Aug. 4, 2006: An Embraer E110 cargo plane crashed in a wilderness area six miles south of the Bennington, Vt., Airport, killing the pilot.

April 3, 2006: A giant C-5 cargo plane laden with fuel and supplies for U.S. troops in Iraq crashed at Dover Air Force Base and broke into three sections. All 17 people on board survived.

March 20, 2006: Two pilots were killed when their twin-engine Beechcraft 99 cargo plane crashed south of Butte, Montana.

Feb. 5, 2006: Two cargo planes collided in midair about 50 miles from General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, causing the fiery crash of one that killed all three people on board. The other plane's crew survived a rough landing. The planes had been due to fly to Iraq for duty under a U.S. defense contract, and were deliberately flying near one another while crew members took pictures of the aircraft.

Nov. 8, 2005: -- A small cargo plane crashed into a Manchester, N.H., Wal-Mart, slightly injuring the pilot. There were no reports of injuries on the ground.
