UN proclaims international day of sport for peace

[August 24, 2013]  UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The U.N. General Assembly has adopted a resolution proclaiming April 6 the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic called the resolution "historic," saying it recognizes that "the fact that sport has a unique power to attract, mobilize and inspire people around the world ... (and) can also serve as a formidable development tool."

The 193-member world body adopted the resolution by consensus on Friday.

International Olymic Committee President Jacques Rogge told diplomats that religion, race, gender and ethnicity "do not matter on the field of play."

Top-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic, speaking on behalf of athletes, said sport "can break cycles of mistrust and hatred" and can help the most disadvantaged youngsters succeed by promoting fair play, team work and respect for opponents.
