[August 26, 2013]  HOUSTON (AP) -- Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. dropped 15 this week to 1,776.

The Houston-based company said in its weekly report Friday that 1,382 rigs were exploring for oil and 387 for gas. Seven were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago there were 1,898 active rigs.

Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, California lost five rigs, Colorado dropped four, Louisiana, North Dakota and Utah each decreased by three, while Ohio and Wyoming each dropped two and West Virginia lost one. Texas gained two rigs, while Kansas and Pennsylvania each rose by one.

Alaska, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma were unchanged.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.
