Saturday, downtown Lincoln was filled with the sweet smells of terrific food as the Up in Smoke Kansas City-sanctioned barbecue competition and the Backyard Barbecue brought in dozens of teams with their smokers and grills.

Saturday evening, after much deliberation by the team of judges, winners were announced in each competition.

For the Up in Smoke competition, the grand champions were Shad and Angie Kirton of Grimes, Iowa. The Kirtons are known in the barbecue world as A Boy & His Barbecue.

The reserve champion was Twyford's Barbecue and Catering, with Marla Twyford cooking solo this year. Twyford usually partners with her husband, but this year he was attending another competition at the same time. Twyford not only competed but also had one of the food vendor trailers on the square this weekend. After taking reserve, some of her fellow contestants joked that perhaps Twyford should leave her husband at home more often.

The top three finishers for each class in the Up in Smoke competition are as follows:

  Chicken Ribs Pork Brisket
