With the generosity and collective action of Zontians and friends around the world, Zonta International has supported projects in 46 countries, provided scholarships and awards to women around the globe, and been a powerful advocate for change in our local and international communities, thereby transforming the world and women's place in it.

The local Zonta organization wants to help raise awareness of the crime of violence against women locally and around the world by publishing 16 facts, one per day, during the 16 Days of Activism.

Dec. 10 -- day 16

Fact 16: WHO supports research on understanding and preventing sexual violence.

Violence against women has been identified as a major public health and human rights problem, but a lack of reliable data on the causes, magnitude and consequences of the problem slows down the search for solutions. To collect such data, WHO initiated the WHO multi-country study on women’s health and domestic violence against women. WHO also helps coordinate the Sexual Violence Research Initiative, a network of researchers, policy makers, activists and donors committed to understanding and preventing sexual violence.
