Veterans to honor memory of President Lincoln

[February 02, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois veterans will mark Abraham Lincoln's 204th birthday with ceremonies at the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site on Feb. 9 and 12. Both events are free and open to the public.

The 66th annual Veterans of Foreign Wars Pilgrimage will take place at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 9, at the Lincoln Tomb. The service will feature a eulogy for the 16th president, with military honors to follow.

Three days later, on Lincoln's actual birthday, members of Springfield American Legion Post 32 will host their 79th annual National Pilgrimage to Lincoln Tomb. Dignitaries will assemble at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 12, and wreaths from Legion posts across the state and country will be placed in the burial chamber. At 11 a.m. the American Legion national commander will address those gathered for the event, and other officials will also speak.

The Sound Celebration Chorus, a part of Sweet Adelines International, will sing patriotic songs for the occasion.

Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site is administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. It is open for free public tours.
