MOUNT PULASKI -- The Mount Pulaski Lady
Toppers played two quarters of great basketball Monday night, and
thankfully that was enough to earn a 53-44 sectional victory over
Lewistown.
The ladies came out firing on
all cylinders in the first quarter in front of a packed gym at MPHS.
The first eight minutes of the ballgame saw the ladies build a
pretty solid 22-8 lead. However, the pumped-up crowd kept getting
deflated over the next two quarters as the ladies just kept hitting
the front of the rim, or in a few instances, no rim at all.
Coach Eric Leever paced the
sidelines, and you could tell his frustration at seeing his talented
club score only seven points in that stretch. However after a
fourth-quarter timeout, whatever the coach said to his team
worked. The girls played a fantastic fourth quarter, scoring 24
points.
Once the buzzer sounded,
everyone in the gym could breathe a sigh of relief as the Lady
Toppers held on for the 53-44 win.
Jessica Awe led the way with
24 points, and Andrea Dickerson tossed in 16 points. Erika Leever
added seven points and Kendra Willoughby had six.
The Lady Toppers (27-4)
will face Illini Bluffs (29-2) in the sectional championship at 7:30
p.m. Thursday in Mount Pulaski.
