[February 19, 2013]  CHARLESTON -- The men's and women's track and field teams from Lincoln College defended their Region 24 indoor titles Friday night at Eastern Illinois University. The men's title was an epic battle that was not determined until the very last race of the night. The women's team had a very tough battle but put the meet away with a string of individual victories.

Region 24 champions for the women's team were Angela Pool in the long jump, Kayla Carrell in the triple jump, Victoria Heller in the 5,000, Martina Hodge in the 60 hurdles, Darshay Wallace in the 60, Angela Pool in the 400, Rachel Whittaker in the 600, Tykeshia Thompson in the 800, Angela Pool in the 200, and the 4x400 of Thompson, Fizer, Whittaker and Pool.

Region 24 champions on the men's side were Steven Hartzell in the long jump; Shain Ford in the triple jump; Derrick Guest in the high jump; Khalid Omar in the 1,600; Norvel Mohammed in the 400 and 200; the 4x400 of Guest, Jackson, Penrod and Mohammed; Omar in the 1,000; Jordan Staley in the 5,000; and the 4x800 of Brown, Flores, Omar and Taylor.

Coach Herron said: "I had been telling our team for two weeks that this was going to be a tough meet. We had several athletes step up and do more than their share to bring these titles back. You can't ask for too much more of an exciting night than a region title coming down to a last race and pulling out the victory (for the men's team).

"This was a great way to end our indoor season. Now we have to get ready for the outdoor season because we know that the other teams are going to give us their best shot to take our outdoor titles."

The Lynx will not be in action again until April 2.
