Author to be at Lincoln Presidential Museum to discuss 'Fall of the House of Dixie'

[January 05, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- Bruce Levine will speak Wednesday at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum on Southern culture and the impact of the Civil War and will sign copies of his book "Fall of the House of Dixie."

Who: Author Bruce Levine, history professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

What: Levine will discuss his book "The Fall of the House of Dixie: The Civil War and the Social Revolution that Transformed the South" and sign copies. The book uses diaries, letters, government documents and more to paint a picture of Southern culture just before the Civil War and then track that culture's collapse as the war raged on and slaves won their freedom.

Where: Union Theater, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, 212 N. Sixth St., Springfield.

When: Wednesday, Jan. 9, with author signing books at 6:30, speaking at 7. (Also, Levine will take part in a "Teacher Talks" session with educators at 5:30 at the presidential library.)

The event is free but requires reservations, which can be made by calling 217-558-8934. The museum's store and exhibits will be open during the event.
