The power of the Internet
William A. Shaffer grew up in Troy, Ill. His father was involved in coal mining, and William himself grew up to be a part-time professional photographer and did work for newspapers in the Troy area. In the early 1970s he was passing through Lincoln and spied this old coal mine. The structures intrigued Shaffer as a photographer and interested him as the son of a miner, so he snapped these shots. Last week, 40 years later, he came across the pictures, went searching on the Internet for Lincoln newspapers and found Lincoln Daily News. When he emailed the photos to us, he said he wasn’t sure what kind of reception he would get from a local paper, but he wanted to try to share them with our community. He also said that through the years, these have been some of his favorite shots. Thank you, William, for sharing them with LDN and now with our readers.
