[July 12, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Director Lisa Bonnett announced this week that the agency has launched a new public information website about the Clinton 3 landfill. On the website, viewers can find inspection reports and a list of permit applications as well as receive an overview of the facility's history, design and groundwater monitoring requirements.

The website is part of the agency's renewed efforts to make sure the hundreds of thousands of residents who depend on the Mahomet Aquifer are aware of the latest information about Clinton Landfill 3's operating status and the continued groundwater monitoring around the site.

"This Web page will be a valuable resource to everyone who is committed to protecting the Mahomet Aquifer now and in the future," said Bonnett. "IEPA will continue working with local governments and our partners in the community to do everything we can to ensure that Clinton Landfill 3 is properly monitored and the water in the aquifer remains free of contamination."

In addition to providing more information to the community about its efforts, IEPA recently increased the frequency of inspections at the landfill from once quarterly to once every other month, as well as independently reviewing the water monitoring sample results.

While the application to allow polychlorinated biphenyls, known as PCBs, to be accepted at the Clinton landfill remains before the U.S. EPA, the IEPA stresses that as of this time, PCBs have never been confirmed to be present in any community water supply on a statewide basis, the Mahomet Aquifer system or in the Clinton community water supply wells.
